What this guide covers

Points only become useful in context: how they are earned, what they can be exchanged for, when they expire and which account conditions apply. The sections below show which details can be verified and which decisions remain with the third-party sponsor.

Start with the earning event

Reward programs can issue points for purchases, surveys, account activity or promotional participation. List the exact action required and any spending threshold. “Earn points” is not meaningful without the denominator: how many points, for what action and under which limits.

For a sponsored promotion, also separate ordinary program earnings from a chance-based prize. They may be shown near each other but follow different terms.

Read the redemption table

Points do not have a universal value. One program may allow statement credits, another may offer merchandise, and a third may restrict points to specific reservations. Compare examples from the current redemption table rather than assigning a value based on the number alone.

Check minimum redemption levels and increments. A small balance can be difficult to use if the first available reward requires many more points.

Check expiration and inactivity rules

Some points expire on a fixed schedule. Others remain active while an account has qualifying activity. Record the rule, the time period and what counts as activity. Marketing emails and app notifications are not substitutes for the written program terms.

Look for caps and exclusions

Earning rates may apply only up to a monthly or annual cap. Particular purchases, payment methods or product categories may be excluded. If a promotion offers bonus points, check whether the bonus combines with standard earning and when it is expected to post.

Identify account and privacy requirements

A rewards program may require an account to track balances. Review the sponsor’s privacy policy before registering. Note marketing options, data-sharing descriptions and any request that seems unrelated to administering the program.

saveyourmoney does not create the account and cannot view or transfer a balance.

Separate usefulness from excitement

Ask a practical question: can you use the redemption options under your normal habits without spending more than planned? A high point total can still have limited use if the rewards are narrow or the expiration period is short.

Build a one-page comparison

For each program, write down the earning action, cap, first usable reward, expiration rule, account requirement and major exclusion. That small table is more reliable than comparing headline point totals.
